As Commissioners, our goal has been to create and maintain a professional fire and EMS organization. Over the last few years we have made some changes and improvements that will improve our efficiency and effectiveness while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
- We have purchased new equipment and personal protective gear to help keep our firefighters safe and help them work more efficiently.
- A new policy and procedures manual for the district helps to insure safety and fairness, along with maintaining fiscal and legal responsibilities. We continue to update this manual as issues and needs change.
- We have made additional training available to all members of the Fire District.
- We have begun to assist Worley Ambulance personnel by responding to ALS medical calls.
- New station construction continues near Setters. This station will be centrally located within the District and will improve response to many of our calls. It will also provide a much needed training facility. Our outlying stations will still be maintained and staffed with volunteers.
- The District now has three full time paid professional firefighter/EMS personnel. This has improved our response, especially during daytime calls when most of our volunteers are at work.
We have a great group of talented people who devote many hours of their time as volunteers, but working with a mostly all volunteer organization can create some challenges. Finding and maintaining volunteers has always been one of our top concerns, and as Commissioners, we are looking into ways to make volunteering more attractive. Recruiting and retaining good people is crucial to providing good services to our patrons as well as helping to keep insurance costs down.
As chairman of the WFD Board of Commissioners I would like to thank everyone for their support, especially our dedicated volunteer staff. I hope everyone has a safe and fun year.
