By providing an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape a home fire, smoke alarms double a family’s chances of getting out of a home fire alive – but only if they work. So, when you change your clocks for daylight savings, make a lifesaving change in your household – change the batteries in your smoke alarms. While it may seem like a simple and easy habit to remember, 20 percent of homes in the United States do not have a working smoke alarm, mostly due to dead or missing batteries, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Therefore, over 25 million homes are even more at risk of facing a deadly home fire. Sadly, about 540 children ages 14 and under die each year from a home fire.*
This simple habit takes just a moment, but is the best defense your family has against the devastating effects of a home fire. This year, the spring time change takes place on Sunday, March 14. Please join us in sharing this potentially life-saving information with your friends and family.
